Los Angeles-based artist Sloe Motions painted the famous mural outside the building in January 2020 after Kobe and Gianna Bryant were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash.
Cecilia Moran, the owner of Hardcore Fitness, said the owner of the building wanted the mural removed so he could sell advertising.
“What he informed me was, if I don’t remove the mural by December 31st he will do it and I will have to pay all the costs involved,” Moran said. ABC7. “I’m OK with that, because I refuse and I stand by what I believe. And I believe that is not right.
“I don’t believe in destroying something that has a lot of impact on people.”
At press time, the petition had over 27,000 signatures. The owner of the building has not yet made a public comment.
