Will OceanGate face legal action?
Before starting the trip, the five passengers signed a liability waiver accepting that it could result in death.
However, despite this, the waiver may not protect OceanGate from potential lawsuits by the victims’ families.
Timothy E Allen, a lawyer and former Secret Service agent, said in a statement on The Independent that the waivers do not protect the company in case of defects in the sub.
“Submarines operate in a high-pressure environment, and any errors or weaknesses in construction, design, or materials used can lead to catastrophic failures such as implosion,” said he.
“If it can be established that the implosion was caused by inherent mechanical or engineering defects in the submarine, the responsible party may be held liable, even if a waiver is signed.”

Bodies of missing Titanic passengers ‘irretrievable’
The bodies of five passengers aboard the Titanic sub lost in a “catastrophic implosion” near the sinking may never be recovered from the Atlantic, the US Coast Guard said.
The OceanGate Titan’s pressure chamber was found among other debris, approximately 1,600ft from the Titanic’s bow on the sea floor by a remote operated vehicle (ROV) on Thursday.
“It’s an incredibly unforgiving environment out there on the seabed. The debris is consistent with a catastrophic ship explosion. We’ll continue to work and search the area below but I don’t have an answer to the prospects at this time, ” said Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard.

US Coast Guard investigating the cause of the Titanic sub implosion
The US Coast Guard announced yesterday that they are investigating the cause of the underwater explosion of a tourist submersible that killed all five people on board while diving the Titanic wreck.
The announcement comes a day after Canada’s Transportation Safety Board said it was conducting its own investigation into the Titan explosion, raising questions about the unregulated nature of such expeditions.
“My main goal is to prevent a similar event by making the necessary recommendations to improve the safety of the maritime domain around the world,” Captain Jason Neubauer, the chief investigator of the coast guard said.
The coast guard opened what it called a marine board investigation on Friday, Mr Neubauer said, and was working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to recover evidence, including a salvage operation at the debris site on the sea floor.
