Florida Governor Ron De Santis has officially announced that he will enter the race for President of the United States in 2024, ready to become the biggest opponent of former President Donald Trump in the Republican primary.
Unlike Trump, De Santis has pushed pro-crypto policy many times in the past and is strongly opposed to Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).
De Santis Defends Bitcoin
De Santis announced his plans to run for a Spaces on Twitter with the owner of the platform, Elon Musk, on Wednesday. Musk has DECLARED regrets voting for Joe Biden in the 2020 election, but is also not interested in Trump because he wants a “normal person for president.”
Both Musk and De Santis found common ground in their opposition to “woke” ideology, and their support for free speech. It also happened to be both of them crypto friendlywhile Trump has repeatedly called Bitcoin “cunning.”
When asked about his view on the state of crypto regulation in the United States, De Santis said that citizens have “every right to do with Bitcoin,” and is against any law that would prohibit its use.
“As President, we will protect the ability to do things like Bitcoin,” De Santis said. “I don’t really have an itch to control everything that people can do in this space.”
De Santis echoed comments from other Republicans who support crypto in agreeing that the Biden Administration is trying to kill the crypto industry in the United States by regulation. After a series of enforcement actions by regulators against exchangestablecoin issuers, and banks that support cryptoCompanies like Coinbase are desperate for clarity on the rules of the road surrounding crypto in the United States.
“The current regime – they clearly have it in for Bitcoin, and if it continues for another four years, they’re likely to kill it,” he added.
In Bitcoin Miami 2023 last week, Democratic Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy PROMISE to protect the “inviolable right” of citizens to hold and use Bitcoin. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez himself is a Bitcoin believer, who believes in this gives an advantage over the fiat currency system.
No CBDCs for De Santis
In contrast, the Biden White House has expressed interest in implementing a potential CBDC to “bring the US financial infrastructure into the digital age…
Similar to Republic Congressmen Tom Emmer and Ted Cruz, De Santis is completely against CBDCs. He introduced the law in March until forfeited any such technology used in Florida.
“I see this as a huge transfer of power from individual consumers to a central authority, and I don’t think that’s good for a free society,” he said.
