    Today’s Quordle answers, game #472, are…

Some days, the gods of Quordle are smiling on you. Today is one of those days, for me at least.

My strategy involves playing three sets of words to start – STARE, DOILY, PUNCH – and that usually gives me three or four letters for each answer at the end of the third guess. Today, I gave all five letters for two answers, four for another and three for the last answer. What’s more, for one of the answers – DANCE – it gave me all five letters in green. No, that one didn’t take long to solve!

CRYPT, WHEEL and NOBLE followed quickly after, and I solved the Daily Quordle with two guesses left.

The Daily Sequence is harder – isn’t it always? I need five guesses AGAIN to solve the first puzzle. Clearly this was a deliberate ploy on Quordle’s part, to pre-load the difficulty. And I love it every time. I eventually found FILLY, leaving me with only five guesses to solve the other three, but they were more straightforward and I finished the remaining two chances. Phew!

What are you doing today? Send me an email and let me know.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

    What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenged you to guess a new five-letter word every day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And instead of completing them, you do them simultaneously. You get nine guesses, instead of six for Wordle, but the rules are very similar.

It is played online by The Quordle website (Opens in a new tab) and you can also get it through the Merriam-Webster site (Opens in a new tab)after the dictionary bought Quordle last year.

Like Wordle, the answers are the same for every player every day, meaning you’re competing with the rest of the world. And just like Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a new challenge every day.

The website also includes a practice mode – which I definitely recommend using before trying the game properly! – and has daily stats including a streak count. You can also get Quordle Achievements – specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing more times, or guessing more difficult words.

Oh, and it’s hard. It’s really hard.

What are the rules of Quordle?

The rules of Quordle are almost the same as those of Wordle.

    1. The letters that are in the answer and in the correct place will be green.

    2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

    3. The letters that are not in the answer will be greyed out…

    4. …BUT the word you guessed appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so that A is green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the last two.

    5. Answers are never plural.

    6. Letters may appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of the same letter, they can both be yellow, be green, or one be yellow and the other green.

    7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for example.

    8. You don’t need to include the correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent in Wordle’s Hard mode.

    9. You have nine riddles to find the answers to in Quordle.

    10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle should be approached differently from Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t just blindly throw letters at them and expect to win – you’re better off standing out if you think strategically.

The same is the case with Wordle, of course, but even more so with Quordle.

There are two important things to remember.

    1. Use a few words to start

First, you don’t want just an opening word, but almost certainly two or three start words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starter words, because the same things that make them work so well also apply here. But after that, you should choose another word or possibly two that uses more of the common consonants and that includes any remaining vowels.

For example, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters of the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are many other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, good luck!

    2. Narrow things down

Second, if you are faced with a word where the answer can easily be one of several options – for example -ATCH, where it can be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you definitely want to Guess a word that narrows down the options.

In Wordle, you can try several in a row and hope that one is correct, if you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but sometimes it works. Also, this is the only Hard mode option. But with Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you’re not guessing enough.

In the above scenario, CLAMP would be a good guess, as it can point the way to four out of seven words in one go.
