platoon, best known for its exercise bikesis undergoing a major rebrand and doubling down on its software efforts by launching three membership levels on its mobile app.
The fitness brand now wants to focus on providing “fitness offerings” that anyone can do at home or at the gym without having to buy the company’s expensive hardware. Looking at official trailer, it appears that all you need is yourself, a mobile device, and maybe some weights. The three new app tiers are Peloton App Free, App One, and App Plus; which all vary in terms of price and what they offer.
As the name suggests, Peloton App Free is available at no cost to you. It offers access to over “50 classes curated by Peloton’s 12 exercise classes”. These include strength training, cardio workouts, and meditation plans. Some classes will be part of a rotating set that will change on an “ongoing basis” to keep things interesting. It is not known, however, how often they will update. A company representative told us that “an update cadence has not yet been fully decided”.
Premium levels
Peloton App One is the first of the paid tiers. For $12.99 a month (about £10 and $20 AUD) or $129 a year (about £100 and $200 AUD), you get “unlimited access to thousands of classes across” all ten six of the brand’s exercise classes. This includes everything under the Free tier as well as exclusive content like Yoga classes. Members “can also take up to three equipment-based [classes]” which includes indoor bikes, treadmills, and rowers. And best of all, App One offers on-demand, live classes almost every day of the week.
App Plus, as you may have guessed, is the highest tier. For $24 a month (about £20 and $36 AUD) or $240 a year (about £200 and $360 AUD), users get unlimited access to everything in Peloton’s “huge library”; except two: Work hours and Amazing classes, both of which require specific equipment. App Plus even has exclusive “special content” in the form of Challenges, Programs, and Collections.
Beyond the app update, the company also launched Peloton Gym in all five of its exercise levels. This section contains written exercise plans aimed at helping you build your strength along with an accompanying video to help guide you. According to the post, you can do the exercises at your own pace so there is no need to rush.
AVAILABLE
In a recent report by The Verge, Peloton spokesman Ben Boyd says current Peloton subscribers will “automatically upgrade to App Plus Membership with no price change until December 5, 2023.” After that day, users can choose to pay an “additional price or switch [down] at a cheaper level.” This was confirmed by a representative from TechRadar earlier.
The three tiers currently operate the Peloton app in “all of the brand’s five global markets.” The other two tiers, Peloton Guide and Peloton All-Access, will remain at their current price points.
It will be interesting to see if Peloton’s gamble pays off. Moving away from indoor bikes that made them famous is definitely a risky move. However, considering the fact that Peloton just remembered more than two million exercise bikes due to safety concerns, it might be a good idea to start diversifying a little.
