One person died and another was injured after the attack in the center of Paris, near the Eiffel Tower.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced the incident on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
“The police bravely arrested a murderer who attacked passers-by in Paris, around the Quai de Grenelle. One dead and one injured being treated by the Paris fire brigade. Please avoid the area,” the minister wrote.
The anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said it was not yet in charge of the investigation.
“The killer was quickly neutralized by the police. We are trying to save this man’s life. This is a person who died and they (the people who were attacked) were tourists,” said Dr Patrick Pelloux on BFM TV.
The BFM, quoting the police, said that the person who died was a German national and the killer’s weapon was a hammer.
Saturday night’s incident in central Paris comes less than eight months before the French capital hosts the Olympic Games and could raise questions about the security of the global sporting event.
Paris is planning an unprecedented opening ceremony on the Seine river that could attract 600,000 spectators.
