The lawsuits began because SK Broadband wanted Netflix to help partially cover the costs Squid game-caused an increase in streaming traffic in South Korea. A court in South Korea said that Netflix is obliged to pay for the additional needs of the network. SK estimates that the popular show cost it an additional 27.2 billion Korean won, which translates to about $23 million.
The companies will start offering bundled packages that combine Netflix with IPTV on SK Broadband and SK Telecom service plans. The two are also looking for ways to “use AI technologies developed by SK Telecom and SK Broadband.”
The collaboration, said VP of Netflix APAC partnerships Tony Zameczkowski, “will enable Netflix to develop entertainment experiences for a wider Korean audience.”
The partnership is part of SK’s philosophy “where customer value comes first,” said Choi Hwanseok, SK Telecom’s VP of corporate strategy. He added, “We will continue to develop into an AI company and work with various players at home and abroad.”
