Jose Mourinho has criticized the decision to strip Juventus of 10 points with just two games of the 2022-23 Serie A season remaining and suggested his side’s approach to Roma could change if the verdict is handed down it’s still early.
Juventus were docked 10 points by the FIGC’s Federal Court of Appeal on Monday in the latest development in their case regarding past transfer transactions. The club, which has denied any wrongdoing, has been accused of fixing their balance sheets by raising transfer fees.
Juventus was initially stripped of 15 points in January before it was re-awarded in April by the Board of Guarantors of the Italian Olympic Committee.
The drop in points saw Juventus drop from second to seventh in Serie A and means sixth-placed Roma have a clear chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
But Mourinho told DAZN: “It’s a joke to know it in the remaining two games. For us and for everyone, even for Juventus.
“Our approach would have been different if we had known before the Monza and Bologna games. I feel sorry for (Massimiliano) Allegri and his players, but at the league level, I have to say that it has changed in things.
When asked if it meant that the season was over, Mourinho replied: “For me, yes, but I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I feel sorry for professionals who work like me because they pay for the mistakes made by those director and maybe the club.
Mourinho rotated his side for the Serie A fixtures against Monza and Bologna in May, and Roma were drawn in both fixtures.
Monday’s 2-2 draw at Salernitana means Mourinho’s side sit four points behind AC Milan in the final Champions League spot with two games remaining.
If they finish outside the top four, Roma can still qualify for next season’s Champions League if they beat Sevilla in the Europa League final.
