2022 that is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is an amazing movie in many respects, most of them in the way it is treated Wanda Maximoff and his character post-WandaVision. A separate part of the film that rankled the audience as a second act of action in an alternate universe home to the Illuminati, which featured some surprise return cameos for Marvel alums such as Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Haley Atwell’s Peggy Carter. The latter belongs to the world Captain Britain—a variant first introduced in What if Marvel…? just a year later—but before viewers can wrap their heads around that, Peggy and most of the Illuminati continue to Wanda will delete it.
It’s incredibly mean and bad fan service, and if you’re not a fan of that twist, then Atwell shares your sentiment. While promoting for Mission: Impossible Dead Count, he admitted to Happy Sad Confused podcast that it was a “frustrating moment” to call to get Darth Maul’d with his own weapon. “I said, ‘That’s not my choice!'” he said. “When he was like, ‘I can do this all day,’ and then he was immediately cut by a frisbee. And the audience was like, ‘He can’t do this all day. Obviously, you can’t, so egg on your face.’ That doesn’t serve Peggy very well.”
No wonder, he considered What if…? the more rewarding return, which is hard to argue with. Not only does he get an episode of his own (one that opens the entire series, essentially), the animated Captain Britain should have an actual arc set to continue into the second season finale. “Any actor will tell you,” he continued, “to be able to go into a booth effectively in your pajamas and do an animation is really fun because you’re focused on the voice as an instrument and you’re doing -first display tool.”
The reaction to the Illuminati murders – which also includes Lashawna Lynch and Anson Mount reprising their roles as Maria Rambeau (Captain Marvel) and Black Bolt – shows how not all veteran MCU actors are brought back equally. As the studio started to have older actors who changed their roles in the movies like He-Hulk and Secret Invasion, the way they are used after being offscreen for a long time has a different meaning than if they are constantly popping up and coming out. And for a property with so many characters getting dirty with each new look, it’s easy to see how fragmented that scene can be.
