Another day, another buzzy rumor going viral on Crypto Twitter.
Rumors that the highly anticipated (and widely leaked) Grand Theft Auto 6 game will either be a blockchain game or include a type of cryptocurrency that could be redeemed in real life resurfaced this week—after first born in 2021 THEN spinning again last year.
However, the claims are currently unfounded. A Forbes Indiaarticle A crypto Twitter account has been cited as its source for the rumors, and neither Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games nor parent company Take-Two Interactive have confirmed or denied the rumors so far.

Video game publication Game Rant speculates that GTA 6 (or whatever it’s officially called) will not introduce a real cryptocurrency but instead may just make cryptocurrency and the metaverse “butt of many jokes.”
Some articles on the internet cite a recent viral tweet from a game content creator as their source of information, but this tweet contains no evidence that confirms only rumors and speculation.
Twitter users added a “Community Note” to the tweet explaining that Rockstar Games or anyone involved in GTA 6 has not said anything to confirm the rumors.
And while Take-Two is making crypto moves, including Zynga studio working on Web3 games, Rockstar issued a ban in November for NFTs and cryptocurrency on fan-operated Grand Theft Auto V servers.
While crypto fans may be hungry for a real GTA cryptocurrency—and Web3 haters are hungry for crypto jabs—right now, there isn’t any evidence to support any of the claims.
Decrypt Take-Two and Rockstar Games reached out for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
