Arsenal’s last hope of winning the Premier League was snuffed out on Saturday by Nottingham Forest, whose 1-0 win courtesy of Taiwo Awoniyi secured their top-flight status.
Eight points clear at the top just two months ago, Mikel Arteta’s side have had a poor end to the season, with their latest defeat ensuring what has become an inevitable looks like back-to-back titles for Manchester City.
In contrast to the despondency of the visitors, Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest celebrated a remarkable survival after reaching 37 points to guarantee safety from relegation back to the second tier Championship which they escaped a year ago the past.
The game turned in the 19th minute when Arsenal’s usually brilliant midfielder Martin Odegaard made a spectacular mistake to give possession to Morgan Gibbs-White who drove forward before finding Awoniyi will push the ball home and wild scenes will be sparked.
Predictably, Arsenal dominated possession but it didn’t count, with Gabriel Jesus blocked several times by the excellent Keylor Navas in goal for the hosts. Forest played on the counter-attack, carving out a number of chances as well.
The result puts Arsenal second on 81 points with one game remaining, while Manchester City have 85 points and three games to go starting at home to Chelsea on Sunday. Forest are 16th and six points clear of the bottom three.
Manchester City became only the 2nd Club to win the Premier League in 3 consecutive seasons:
🥇 Manchester United – (1998/99 – 2000/01 & 2006/07 – 2008/09)
🥈 MANCHESTER CITY – (2020/21 – 2022/23)
