Last week, Disney removed more than 100 of its original programs from streaming services such as Disney+ and Hulu all over the world. That cut mediawhich includes the likes of Willow and Marvel’s Runaways, was axed after Disney gave heads about a week in advance and for seemingly for no real reason at all. Well, that’s not true—it all came under money.
According to a SEC Filing as of late Friday, Disney is set to write off about $1.5 billion after this streaming cleanup. It was previously known that this was a way for Disney to reduce costs, and the filing said that this would be reflected in the company’s fiscal third quarter. But if you think that this is a one-time event, that is not the case. At the end of the filing, the SEC wrote that Disney is “continuing to review it and currently expecting the additional generated content to be removed. ” Those deletions correspond to an additional eestimated at $400 million. But that’s all WHEN these deletions may occur (or what is cancelled performances may be caught in the crossfire), which was not touched by the filing, and Disney has yet to say. Also, it is not known how many recent closures there have been Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience contributed to this write-off.
Either way, it continues to follow in the footsteps of Warner Bros. Discovery, which has removed various shows and movies from its streaming service formerly known as HBO Max. while some of those shows found a home elsewhere on streaming sites like Netflix or Prime Video, others weren’t so lucky. Maybe the bad luck Movies just stay in limbo forever, to the point where even their creators don’t have hard copies they can watch on their own time.
