A 14-year-old girl shot and killed a classmate and injured five others before killing herself at a school in the western Russian city of Bryansk, investigators said Thursday.
Regional Governor Alexander Bogomaz described the shooting as a “terrible tragedy.”
What do we know so far?
“According to preliminary investigation data, a 14-year-old girl brought a pump-action shotgun to school, where she opened fire on her classmates,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The statement said that there were two deaths (one of which was the shooter) and five people were injured. The injured have now been taken to a medical facility, it added.
Investigators are working to determine a motive, the statement said.
The last major school shooting in Russia occurred in September 2022, when a man opened fire at a school in the city of Izhevsk. The attack killed 17 people, including 11 children.
